About KEF

Kashmir Education Foundation (KEF) is a non-profit, non-political educational trust registered in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. It was founded in 1996 by Maj. Gen. (Retd) Rahim Khan and other community leaders. The founders saw that children from remote areas of Kashmir had little access to modern schooling, especially girls.

KEF’s emphasis on education in Azad Kashmir is reflected by its network of three schools and a dedicated teacher training college. KEF is registered as a charitable organization both in Pakistan and the UK. Over the years, KEF has become known for its modern, holistic approach: English-medium instruction, interactive methods, and balanced curriculum.

KEF was founded by and for the communities of the mountains, with the belief that investing in girls’ education in rural Pakistan will yield leaders and teachers who can lift future generations out of poverty.

Our Vision

To see the emergence of a critical mass of future young citizens of Pakistan who will have education, intellectual ability, knowledge and character to meet the challenges facing the country in the 21st century.

Our Mission

In this age of knowledge, to provide modern quality education to the children of the marginalized sections of Pakistan’s rural society in particular, with a view to producing able leaders in various fields of human endeavor. The core objective of KEF’s mission is that its schools which will be few in number, will be Gold Standard institutions and not the usual run of the mill type.

Founding Trustee

Maj. Gen. (Retd.) M. Rahim Khan, H.J. was KEF’s principal founder and guiding force. He enjoyed a distinguished military career (born 1924) and was awarded Pakistan’s Hilal-i-Jur’at (Crescent of Courage) for bravery in the 1971 war.
After retiring from the army, Rahim Khan served as Pakistan’s Defence Secretary and as ambassador to Mozambique and Malaysia. On retiring in 1994, he turned to education: he and his family set up KEF schools and a teacher training college so that “bright children (and particularly girls)” from remote villages could receive modern, English‑medium schooling. He remained KEF’s chair and chief advocate for decades, embodying the Foundation’s commitment to upliftment through education.
“Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty… KEF’s schools must equip rural children to become future leaders.” – Maj. Gen. (Retd.) M. Rahim Khan, H.J. (Founder and First Chairman)
